Samu Games' Artifact Newsletter
September 2003
Volume 3 Issue 9

Welcome to the Artifact Newsletter!

Our apologies for missing the August newsletter, but we're back this
month with a new editor (NightWolf), a new main server, and a new
tool for playing the game.

Langston gives players a new tool to help with game play and
NightWolf gives us the scoop on how to use it under Tips, Tricks &

Thank you for playing and supporting Artifact!

-Current Version
Artifact is the most recent version. You can download it
from here:

-Vote Artifact for MPOGD's "Game of the Month"

-New Artifact Server!
The last two weeks of August, Samu Games moved the Artifact lobby
and game servers to a new host on a new Internet backbone. The first
week was a bit shakey, as you know, but the issues have been
resolved. Overall, the new server is a huge leap forward in terms of
hardware, stability, and connectivity.

The Purpose: The Artifact spreadsheet was created by Langston to
help new players, expert players, and trainers. The spreadsheet
allows easy calculations to be made and makes it possible to track
and tweak population growth cycles to improve playing skills.

| I. The features
| II. How to use the population tracker
| III. How to use the game-pop estimator
| IV. How to use the troop calculator
| V. The facility reference
| VI. Contact information

[I] The features of the spreadsheet are:

1) The population tracker:

Located on the left side of the Excel spreadsheet, this tool allows
a player to put their current population in and track it cycle by
cycle. It calculates the % of growth and estimates future population
cycles. The more data entered the more and more accurate the
estimations become. Use this tool to find when and how to grow
population the most efficiently. (Keep in mind the amount of cities
you have, their populations, if you have artifacts, and your % busy.
They will all alter your results.)

2) The game-pop estimator:

Located in the upper right hand corner, this allows you to figure
out the maximum population possible to obtain in a game. Alter the
information to be formatted for fast, standard, or slow. You will
learn things such as 6 million population in 24 hours of a fast game
is possible if you split at exactly all the right times. The tool is
very useful in comparing your pop results to what you could be
capable of.

3) The troop calculator:

Rather than spending lots of time whipping out the calculator simply
use this tool to find out exactly how much of each resource will be
required for the troop you desire to make. One you have entered the
# of troops it will automatically calculate everything for you.

4) The facility reference:

This is self-explanatory. It is just a reference of the resources
required to make a 50% or 114% efficient facility. Langston and I
agreed having it calculate facility costs out was not a necessary
feature for this version. If asked for, it could be in an updated
version of the spreadsheet.

[II] How to use the population tracker:

Under the city name you can put your city name...really not
necessary unless you plan to keep track of each city individually
vs. total pop. The default name is 'Main'. Next to the name is
the 'Pop' column. As you can figure, you place your current
population there. Then after your city's next population growth
cycle you put it below the first population. Row after row in that
one column. If you are doing more than one city you must leave space
vertically for the different city names and such. Once you add the
2nd set of data it will create a % at which your city just grew and
then use that to predict the next population growth cycle. The more
and more data you enter the more and more accurate the prediction
will become. If you keep track of the data long enough and find a
good 'mean' or average % than you can use that in the next
feature...the game-pop estimator.

III. How to use the game-pop estimator:

The present pop field is default set to 15000 but can easily be
changed. Then you can change the future pop field to whatever
population you would like to achieve. Then you can use an accurate %
from the data you collected from the population tracker, or the
default 4% growth rate to predict what pop you can have. Of course
you also have to fill in the information pertaining to the type of
game such as the pop-ticks per hour, total pop-ticks of the amount
of time you are calculating for, minutes, hours, etc. The default is
setup for a fast game such as the Free Fast-11 Lone Wolf game.

IV. How to use the troop calculator:

The troop calculator is very easy. Just type the number of troop(s)
you wish to create and hit enter. It will give you the resources
required and population required. It is also possible to do
different troops all together in the same calculation. This is very
useful for managing population and resources when making stacks and
figuring how much you will need and have to get. It is also very
handy for the trainers to use in #help =P.

V. The facility reference:

This just tells you the amount of resources required to build 50%
efficiency facilities and 114% efficiency facilities. If there is a
lot of demand we could alter it to do calculations of facilities but
for now it is just a reference table...sorry =P Look for version 2.

If you have questions, comments, suggestions, would like a MS Word
or Notepad copy of the manual, or would like to share data or
discoveries please contact Langston or myself, NightWolf via IM or e-
