NEWARK, NJ- The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 6-3 in front of 3,487 fans at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Somerset took an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first inning on right fielder Ryan Radmanovich's two out two run single. The rally started with a two out walk to third baseman Jeff Nettles and then shortstop Kevin Nicholson doubled down the right field line to put both men in scoring position for Radmanovich.

Newark batted around scoring six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the second inning to take a 6-2 lead. Right fielder Jose Herrera led off with a singledown the third base line and came home when centerfielder Wil Quintana followed with a two run home run (5) to right. Leftfielder Jeremy Todd then tripled off the center field wall and scored on a two out RBI single by third baseman Jose Olmeda. After second baseman Jack Santora singled to left, shortstop Jerson Perez lined an RBI single to left to score Olmeda. First baseman Keith Maxwell then blooped a two run single to right scoring both Santora and Perez after they had moved up a base on a wild pitch.

The Patriots scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Bears lead to 6-3 when leftfielder Pat Boran walked with two outs and scored from first on an RBI double down the left field line by catcher Chris Eickhorst.

Bear starter Andy Zwirchitz (2-4) picked up the win, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking seven in 5.2 innings pitched. Patriots starter Brett Jodie (3-5) suffered the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits in1.2 innings pitched. Bears closer Jake Brooks pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out the side for his tenth save.
