PATRIOTS SHUT DOWN SURF WITH 2-0 WIN

Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Atlantic City Surf 2-0 before 7,748 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Friday evening. The crowd of 7,748 fans was the largest home crowd of the season for the Patriots.

The Patriots broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Center fielder Jeremy Owens singled and scored on left fielder Ray Navarrete’s two-run home run (5) that gave Somerset a 2-0 lead.

Patriots starter Greg Modica (4-5) picked up the win with 5.1 scoreless innings pitched, allowing four hits and striking out six batters. Surf starter Mark Persails (4-7) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs onthree hits and striking out four and walking four batters. Neither starter allowed a hit until the fifth inning.

The Patriots bullpen continued to keep the Surf in line, pitching 3.2 scoreless innings between Brad Clontz and David Elder, who earned his sixth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

With the win, the Patriots improve to 7-8 in the second half of the season and 48-36 overall. The loss drops Atlantic City to 9-6 for the second half and 41-44 overall.

The shutout was the Patriots eighth of the season and Somerset improves to 8-5 in shutout games. The Patriots remain perfect when leading after seven innings, improving to 40-0.

The 2005 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on Saturday, July 30th at Commerce Bank Ballpark as the Patriots take on the Atlantic City Surf at 7:05 pm. Saturday’s game includes Baseball Caps to the first 2,000 fans courtesy of Saturn of Green Brook and Sesame Street Night.
