Somerset 17, Newark 5

Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Newark Bears 17-5 before 4,421 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Monday evening. The Patriots offense was led by center fielder Jeremy Owens, who went 4 for 5 with a single, a triple, a grand slam, and seven RBI for Somerset.

The Patriots took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Left fielder Billy Hall led off with a double down the left field line. Second baseman Emiliano Escandon followed with an RBI double to score Hall. Owens later drove in Escandon on an RBI single to the shortstop.

Somerset jumped out to a 7-0 lead with five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Hall drew a walkand stole second and third base. Escandon and third baseman Jeff Nettles drew walks to load the bases. Shortstop Kevin Nicholson drew a bases loaded walk to plate Hall. Right fielder Ryan Radmanovich then hit a two run single to drive in Escandon and Nettles. Owens followed with a bases clearing triple to right field.

Newark got on the board in the top of the third inning on a solo home run by designated hitter Keith Maxwell (15) to make the score 7-1.

The Patriots added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Owens singled and scored on an RBI double by first baseman Todd Betts. Designated hitter Ray Navarrete drew a walk, and after a wild pitch, Hall followed with a two run single to drive home Betts and Navarrete. Pinch hitter George Sandel then hit a triple to score Hall and give Somerset an 11-1 lead.

The Bears cut the lead to 11-5 with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Second baseman Jose Olmeda drew a walk, shortstop Jerson Perezsingled, and Maxwell singled to load the bases. Right fielder Jose Herrera then hit an RBI single to score Olmeda and Perez scored on a wild pitch. Left fielder Michael Moore singled home Maxwell and Herrera scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Francisco Santos.

Somerset extended the lead to 17-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning. The inning was highlighted by a grand slam by Owens (15), his second grand slam of the season for Somerset.

Patriots starter Todd Moser (3-3) picked up the win, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits and four strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Bears starter Brent Billingsley (5-7) suffered the loss, allowing seven earned runs on five hits in two innings pitched.

The 2005 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Tuesday, August 9th when the Patriots take on the Newark Bears at Commerce Bank Ballpark for an 11:05 am game. Tuesday’s game includes Camp Day presented by Bullfrog Sunblock.
