The Gamer’s Beat 09.28.05

After nearly a two week hiatus, the Gamer’s Beat is back, and with new content. Not only will this be the place to find some of the latest updates to games in the OMGN Games Directory, but you’ll also find the latest happenings with OMGN as well. Plus you’ll also find many more news tidbits occurring during, or in the past week. With that being said, let’s get started.

In this week’s edition, we take a look at staff openings, game updates and release notes, as well as welcome some new games into our Games Directory.

Job/Staff Openings

Forgotten Planets is looking for a Flash Designer. The following is a short statement from Ryan Scott, Forgotten Planets creator, concerning the opening:

“We want someone to touch up the homepage and make it more appealing on the eyes. Anyone with Flash experience who could whip up a little intro should send email me at ryan@forgottenplanets.com for further details and include samples of other flash/websites that have been done (if applicable).”

You can visit the Forgotten Planets website here for any future staff openings.

Game Updates and Release Notes

Interstellar War‘s lead developer, Lee Tuder, has posted following updates on the a href=”http://war.webappuk.com/Home.asp”>IW website:

“The game tick procedure is now in place and the tick time is currently set at 15 seconds. This means your weapons will recharge once every 15 seconds and you ship will move towards its target at the same rate. Ill monitor the load that this creates on the server and change it if necessary.”

“The Sol system is now complete and all faction star bases have been moved to Sol for the duration of alpha testing. Work on the database restructure is now complete, this should allow the game to support many simultaneous users even on the small server we have.”

Additionally, Mr. Tudor has also announced the following release notes:

*Clan overview screen added to main game screens and online members list transferred to this screen.
*Various rewording made to a few screens.
*Cool downs on weapons implemented and ship targeting framework added to tactical screen.
*Auto resize function added to communications pop-up.
*The friend system is now in place, you can now request friend status in a private message to any player you meet and they can accept if they want. You can board ships where the captain has you on his/her friends list, even if the ship is not of your faction.
*Movement is now in place, if you are the pilot on a ship, you will be able to fly your ship around the system, orbit planets and return to the star base.
*Ship systems can now be switched online and offline by the engineer, as long as there is spare power for them.

You can read additional updates and release notes by visiting the Interstellar War website here.

Knight of War, which relaunched last week — Knight of War is Back — has made several game updates and changes. Game creator, Danny Crum, has posted to following updates in the KoW forums:

“I’ve lowered the experience points players get for defeating other members. It was getting out of hand. It’s going to be unfair at the current time because some members have already taken advantage of the outrageous experience, but once the game is reset and launched officially this will be fixed. Just hang in there with me for now.” 09.23.05

“I had to separate the weapon and armor shop into two different pages. I was getting a problem with purchasing weapons and armor when it checked the number of soldiers you had.” 09.23.05

“You can now sell back your weapons and armor. Since it’s harder to steal weapons than gold you can purchase equipment and sell it back for 75% of the purchase cost. You can kind of use this as a savings account to purchase upgrades and larger weapons.” 09.23.05

“I have put a time/date stamp on the battle logs so you can tell exactly when someone attacked you. This should also keep them in the correct order. I think I am also going to try to only show the last 50 attacks. The battle logs are getting too large.
Still working on another bug in the attack log where it looks like you have attacked yourself.”
09.23.05

“Battle-logs should be completely fixed.” 09.23.05

“I fixed a treasury bug today. The upgrade amounts were wrong.” 09.26.05

“Fixed the amount of gold being stolen from a ‘steal gold’ attack. It was a little out of hand.” 09.28.05

“You can now gain renown for stealing gold, sabing weapons, and stealing weapons.” 09.28.05

OMGN Updates

This is a little new addition to the Gamer’s Beat. Something to just introduce you guys of new games added to the directory in the past week, as well as any update to OMGN I may have for you guys.

StarTrek: UUS Audacious is a free forum-base RPG created by Donald Murphy.

“With ship full of hardened Star-fleet officers in the late 24th century. The USS Audacious is NOT just another role play by Forums! The Brilliant story lines & Character development makes the Audacious one of the best Star Trek role play by Email website EVER!”

spacetrace is a free time-base strategy with a space theme.

“spacetrace is a free space browser based multi-player online game with real time and real space simulation. The game play is well balanced focuses on fleet tactics and alliance play. This game differs from other games in this category, because you don’t accumulate resources or stuff of that sort. It is about measuring your tactical skill with other players.”

Confrontation Unlimited is a free client strategy currently in ALPHA, and developed by Millenium Project Enterprises.

“Confronation Unlimited is a freeware MMORTS game featuring multi-player online gaming in a three dimensional world. It is currently in development. You can already sign up for the beta phase.”

Solar Leaders is a free browser turn-base game developed by Nick Smith.

“Simple, free, easy to play and very addictive. Populate the 9 planets with your residents. Trade nomads (space wanderers) for residents. Form or Join a Guild and help fellow members. Protect your residents with Bodyguards. Send Assassins to eliminate your opponent’s residents. Send Probes to gain information about planetary setups. Buy Scramblers to confuse the Probes. Send Trackers to look for Hidden Nomads. Gamble with traders, or play PlanetHoppers (millionaire style game) to gain extra Nomads.”

That’s it from this week’s edition of the Gamer’s Beat. I’m hoping for a bigger one next week, so please send emails to xeonx@omgn.com if you have any news that should be in next week’s Beat.

Specializing in Earth: 2025

Specializing
This is by far the MOST IMPORTANT principle in Earth: 2025. Specializing is a must in order to achieve success in the game. This write-up will show you the importance of specializing.

How to Specialize?
There are 4 main commodities in Earth, namely military, technology, food and cash. Specializing means to concentrate your country to produce only one type of commodity. This is done by having only one or two types of buildings and technology. More details will be provided when you learn about strategies.

Why Specialize?
The one and only reason for specializing is that you’ll make more by specializing than by mixing your country. I could show you the math but that will take too long. Just view the status of the countries out there and you’ll see the proof.

Common Misassumption
Most newcomers fall into this trap. They assume that all aspects of the game are important and they worry when their countries do not produce a certain commodity. Thus they start having all types of buildings to maintain growth in all fields.

Rest assured that it is okay and normal to have a negative income and/or food production. You can gain the cash and food through other means like selling military. This will become clearer when you try out the strategies.

Land
The next most important principle in the game is to have a lot of land. Since everyone specializes, this is what separates an average player and a good player.
How do you get lots of land?
Read the Landgrabbing Guide in the Strategy Board

Why is land important?
Firstly, land contributes directly to your networth.
Secondly, buildings contribute to networth and the amount of land you have determines how many buildings you can have.

Thirdly and most importantly, the more buildings you have, the more you can produce.

Common Misassumption
While it is important to have a lot of land, do not go rushing out there, grabbing everyone like a mad man just to be the fattest one around. Land is only good if you can keep it. That’s why land gaining is a fine art.

You need to have a right combination of military that allows you to hit others for good returns as well as defending yourself against possible grabs and retaliations. This combination depends on the type of strategy you’re playing and also your preferred style of landgrabbing.

Turns
The third and final principle to get across. There is only a certain number of turns for a reset. It is possible to gain less than this number but never more. Assuming you specialize, the way in which you use your turns will determine your networth and finishing rank.

There are two main areas where players might waste turns, landgaining and construction speed.

Landgaining with respect to Turns
As you know, the amount of acres you gain from exploring decreases as the size of your country increases. Therefore, it is wiser to attack for land rather than to explore. At this moment, the reset is 2-weeks-old. For a country at 3000 acres, the rate of exploring is 10 Acres per turn. The average return from attacks is 150 Acres which is equivalent to 75 Acres per turn. By attacking, you will have saved 13 turns that can be used for other purposes.

Similarly, it is important that you succeed in your attacks. A failed attack means losing turns as you gained nothing from it and you’ll have to spend some turns to regain readiness before you can attack again.

Construction Speed with respect to Turns
Construction Speed refers to how many buildings you can build per turn (BPT). You increase your BPT by building Construction Sites (CS).

Newcomers make the mistake of having a low BPT. They feel that it is a waste of turns building so many CS when the increase in BPT is so meager. Let me illustrate.

If you have a BPT of 50 you’ll take 4 turns to build 200 buildings. While a BPT of 20 will take you 10 turns to build the same 200 buildings. You’ll gain around 800 acres each day. A saving of 6 turns each day will give you around 400 turns by the end of the reset. Okay, you’ll need 120 turns to go from 20 BPT to 50 BPT so that’s 280 turns saved.

But that doesn’t mean building tones of CS will help you finish well. There are stages where you’ll build intensively, and others where you stop building. This all depends on the strategy you choose and the way you landgrab.

Quest for Yap Game Basics and Terms

Game Basics and Terms
======================

Ship Values
————————————–

Shields: An energy barrier designed to deflect projectiles. Shields are emitted from generators on the ships hull. Shields do not take damage from projectile weapons, only energy weapons.

Armor: A thick titanium plating on the hull of ships. Armor is not effected by EM weapons. Armor is not damaged until all of a ship’s shields and drones are destroyed.

Drones: Robots armed with small laser weapons. Drones swarm around the enemy and try to cause as much damage as possible. Drones are stored in the hull of the ships and are launched during combat. Drones do not effect the enemy shields or armor until all enemy drones are destroyed. Drones are mainly used to defend planets. Drones are counted as 5 armor each from a defensive standpoint. So, if a weapon can destroy 50 armor, it can destroy 10 drones.

Turrets: Rotating consoles where weapons are placed. The number of turrets your ship has limits the number of weapons.

Cloak: Cloaked ships cannot be seen by enemy players unless that player is in the Krioni race.

Weapon Types
————————————–

Laser/Plasma: These weapons use concentrated beams of light or balls of plasma to damage a target. They will overload shield generators and will also burn through armor plating, so they damage both shields and armor.

Electromagnetic: Electromagnetic, or EM, weapons only damage shields. When coming in contact with a shield barrier, the EM waves travel through the shields to the generators and screw up electrical systems, having an extreme effect on shields. EM weapons do not damage ship hulls or drones.

Projectile: These weapons are all projectiles of some kind. This group includes torpedos, miniguns, and bombs. Projectile weapons only damage armor. Shields were invented as a defense against these weapons, and they just bounce off into the void of space when coming in contact with a shield.

Goods
————————————–

Iron: This is the most common good. It is used in the production of steel, and is very cheap.

Coal: This is the next most common good. Also used in construction of steel, but not in as large of quantities.

Silicon: Much less common than coal, silicon is the main component in the production of computer chips.

Uranium: Used to power nuclear engines. Uranium is mainly a cash crop.

Gold: Rare. Gold is included in computer chips, and can be very profitable to trade in.

Steel: Created at a Foundry, steel is expensive and can be sold for good profits.

Computer Chips: Created at Electronics Plant. Computer Chips are used in everything electronic, and are very expensive.

Industry
————————————–

Mine: Goes deep beneath the planet surface to extract minerals. The more mines you have, the more goods you get.

Foundry: Used to create Steel. 2 iron and 1 coal can be combined to make 1 steel. One foundry can create up to 4 steel.

Electronics Plant: Used to create Computer Chips. 3 silicon and 1 gold can be combined to make 1 computer chip. One Electronics Plant can create up to 2 computer chips.

They are the bounty hunters of the heavens, cruising around looking for the Universe’s Most Wanted. Their ship, the Bounty Hunter, can see cloaked ships, and enable their owners to collect a 20% bonus on bounties. However, the Krioni are required by law to post an additional 25% to post their bounties.

Neothans:
The criminals of the Universe. They fly a special ship, the Pirate, that has a cloak.

Artes:
A commercially-minded race. They get the Super Freighter that has lots of cargo bays. They get a special 5% discount when they buy goods from ports, and also get a 5% bonus on their profit when they sell their goods.

Market is one of the most important aspects of the game!

**-

*When a ship is put on the market, it is no longer used by the player and must stay on for 2 days. After that, they can retract it and use it again.

*There is an initial cost to putting a ship on market.

*Player resources on market stay on market for 3 days, then deteriorate.

*No cost to put resources on market.

*Default initial price for player goods should be suggested at 2/3 of the game market price.

*Game market prices fluctuate as a result of the player goods. Game market has unlimited goods!

Combat Sweep Space Merchant Realms Newbie Game #3

Here’s the log for a combat sweep undertaken by the Trex Mercenaries in Newbie Game #3 of Space Merchant Realms:

Charles says:
See you’re here…haven’t seen Omega Renegade….nobody showed up at 9 M so I’ve been waiting for someone to show up with 300+ turns.
Mark says:
I haven’t seen him. I just got home from church
Mark says:
anything happening?
Mark says:
I have 400 turns right now
Mark says:
Was goining to go check out 3004 and replenish shields and drop some CD’s
Charles says:
As I said, I’ve been waiting for someone to show up. I’ll get my FU armed up and equipped with forces and then I’ll go to the planetary areas.
Mark says:
What happens if I am on a planet when it gets attacked?
Charles says:
If the planetary shields give way, you will be attacked.
Charles says:
Jumping to #1498 right now.
Mark says:
They have to defeat me to take the planet though?
Charles says:
yes
Mark says:
But they can go refill at will though, if they have the $$$
Mark says:
They can tell someone is on the planet when they are attacking it?
Charles says:
after they destroy the planetary shields, yes they can.
Mark says:
All new to me since I have never attacked a planet
Charles says:
I have a fair number of scouts out tonight.
Mark says:
Nice
Mark says:
Tell me when you are ready for me to join you. I am 28/18 with the CD’s on board
Charles says:
what kind of ship do you have?
Mark says:
Destroyer
Mark says:
Can only carry CD’s
Charles says:
FU going to #763
Charles says:
FU’s carry 10 scouts.
Mark says:
That’s one advantage for hunting
Mark says:
I’m currently at 3004
Mark says:
Should I drop my CD’s here?
Charles says:
Had to Uno due to heavy minefields around the CA
Mark says:
I’m not surprised
Mark says:
just got podded
Charles says:
by who?
Mark says:
All I saw was canf in an IST
Mark says:
Someone else must have come while I was attacking him.
Charles says:
or he had IG on
Mark says:
possible
Mark says:
canff and Wizard64
Charles says:
I can go to a Bank if you need the cash.
Mark says:
I did 410 damage to him before they both tagged me
Charles says:
great
Mark says:
but I didn’t get a kill. I would have traded a kill for a kill
Charles says:
yes
Mark says:
Oh for a high speed connection
Charles says:
I have 56k, so I can understand that.
Mark says:
I usually get 28.8k
Mark says:
31.2 once in a while
Mark says:
But it stalls from time to time
Charles says:
I rarely have more than 40k actual connection
Charles says:
Planets at this level are basically deathtraps
Mark says:
How could I tell if he was using a IG?
Charles says:
don’t know
Mark says:
I would not have attacked Canff if I knew another guy was coming. I hung around thinking I could get a kill since he was 8/7
Charles says:
23/17 with 2 open weapon slots…what weaps would you recommend?
Mark says:
Human Photon torpedo maybe?
Charles says:
25/17 now…tell me when you’re ready.
Mark says:
Getting weapons
Charles says:
I’m in Thevian…Let’s go after Wonks.
Mark says:
I will jump there as soon as I get the last couple weapons
Charles says:
I’m at #1333 where you can get the Thevian Flux Missile
Mark says:
what is the shield and armor on it?
Mark says:
damage I mean
Charles says:
40/40
Charles says:
54% base acc.
Charles says:
Based oon the Cureent players list, the only other individual target would be in Salvens…thoe otheser seem tp be hunting packs trying to do what we’re trying to do.
Charles says:
So far, all my scouut reports deal with #764 and the vicinity of the CA at #763….
Mark says:
dangerous area
Charles says:
very
Charles says:
Wonks has stopped playing so its probably either #763 or the planetary galaxies if we are to score any kills.
Charles says:
The planets are probably the best chance to get a lone trader…..
Charles says:
There are over 100 fewer players in this game than in the last game and the last game was ended 2 weeks ahead of schedule….SMR seems to be dropping in player interest.
Mark says:
Got all my weapons. Grabbing CA’s while I am still in protection.
Charles says:
Great…where do you live?
Mark says:
Geographically or what sector?
Charles says:
in MN or IL?
Charles says:
Vikes wiped out the Bears, 25-7
Mark says:
I live in Oregon
Charles says:
ok
Mark says:
I am a 49er fan
Mark says:
ok. Got CD’s and fully loaded. Where do I meet you?
Charles says:
Scouts picking up on Beowulf in #203 in Alskant….want to meet there or at #3004?
Mark says:
Either way
Mark says:
Beowulf is pretty high exp
Mark says:
I’m at 25/18
Charles says:
Let’s go for Beowulf…he wwas with us in NG #1, then quit us. Well, if its 2 vs. 1, then we should be able to get him.
Charles says:
Jumping to #203…..
Mark says:
okay in 203
Mark says:
wait for me. ISP stalled
Charles says:
ok
Charles says:
there already.
Mark says:
204
Mark says:
I’m here
Mark says:
Drop CD’s?
Charles says:
no
Charles says:
that was a sector adjoining a weaps shop.
Mark says:
Are they any benefit while on board
Charles says:
helps in combat
Mark says:
okay. Do they do anything if they are in the sector of the battle?
Charles says:
if they are on board…he’s Human, so perhaps he was in Alskant just to get a weap.
Mark says:
could be. There are 2 weapons shop side by side
Charles says:
Let’s wait a few minutes to see if he comes up on any other scouts….I have Alskant fairly well scouted.
Mark says:
okay
Charles says:
Ypou know how I got Chos to join the alliance, don’t you?
Mark says:
Who is Chos?
Charles says:
A new recrit…was trying to hunt him in Alskant when he deciede to msg me about joining us.
Mark says:
He any good?
Charles says:
just starfted playing the game…seems good so far.
Mark says:
over 6000 exp already. Sounds pretty good
Charles says:
Is Greenmantle often in Human, do you know?
Mark says:
Omega just logged on
Charles says:
Saw that…
Mark says:
I have seen Greenmantle in human and run into CA’s planted by him
Mark says:
both in human and Creonti
Charles says:
After he’s ready, we should relocate to the planets area….Beowulf isn’t showing uo on the scouts anymore.
Mark says:
OK
Mark says:
Is he armed or is he getting weapons?
Charles says:
he says he’s getting weaps
Mark says:
ok

Solar Empire M1 Document

Here’s the M1 document for Solar Empire as written up by Bryan Livingston in 2000. Although most of it was never implemented, it still makes for interesting reading:

Solar Empire
Milestone One Feature Set and Design Document

Solar Empire is in pretty poor shape. To fix it and make the game truly enjoyable for everyone I’ve created this list of features that when implemented will create a complete game that could be considered a finished product. Even it it’s a simplified one. We must have a solid base to work from before we can implement the many new features ideas. Also when this milestone is reached the game can be fully promoted and new game creation will be opened up.

The goal of the game shall be to become the player with the leading score at the end of the game. The winner of each game shall be recorded and posted on the login page as a past winner. Winning Clans will be posted as well. The admins may be able to adjust their games to create a last man standing type of end game.

After this milestone is reached a period of playtesting will happen in which various parts of the economy and battle formulas are adjusted for optimal fairness. After playtesting a second milestone with additional features that add value to the game will decided upon, no new features will be decided upon until then.

Advertisement Fix
Due to the nature of the game, the advertising banners had and average show time of about 1 second, which causes a very low click-thru rate and is not acceptable to the advertisers. Right now there is a hack that puts up blank banners on half the page views, but that needs to be fixed. Fixing this will probably require a redesign of all pages to use frames. Or I may be able to get the caching working correctly for some of my advertising networks that would allow me to set the banners to be the same one across multiple pages. Perhaps something could be done with layers and IFrames.

Trex Mercenaries Treasury In Space Merchant GameLoft Newbie Game #1

GameLoft Newbie Game #1 was possibly the greatest game ever played in the whole history of Space Merchant. Nearly 20,000 players signed up for what turned out to be a colossal slugfest in which the Trex Mercenaries rose from obscurity to challenge the rule of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse and their recruitment/training guild, The Forsaken. Here’s one of the few surviving documents from that era, the TM’s treasury account:

The NBA *Finally* Adopts the Farm Team Approach

The National Basketball Association has finally realized the benefits of adopting a farm team system. Both Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League had figured it out long before. The National Basketball Association Development League has been expanded to 8 teams from the previous 6. More importantly, the NBDL will no longer be an outfit where kids are drafted from smaller colleges only to languish in the minor league until a NBA team takes a chance on them. Instead, NBA team draftees who don’t make it in training camp will be sent down to a NBDL team. Since there are much fewer NBDL teams than NBA teams, this means that for now the big league teams have to “share” the minor league teams. Hopefully, the NBA will realize the benefits of every big team having its own farm squad and cities such as Pittsburgh, Kansas City and St. Louis that currently do not have any kind of pro basketball will soon have a NBDL team of their very own.

From ESPN, here are the NBA team sharing assignments:

• Fayetteville: Charlotte Bobcats, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons.

• Austin: Denver Nuggets, Spurs, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers.

• Fort Worth: Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers.

• Arkansas: Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Memphis Grizzlies, Raptors.

• Florida: Heat, Magic, Celtics, Timberwolves.

• Tulsa: New Orleans Hornets, Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls.

• Albuquerque: Jazz, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, Seattle SuperSonics.

• Roanoke: New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Washington Wizards.

The Gamer’s Beat 09.15.05

***If you’re a game developer, or a regular gamer, feel free to send me an email to let me know about updates or news from your game that you’d like featured in the column. Please make sure you leave an url to the game and your name (or in game name) so you can receive credit.***

In this week’s edition of The Gamer’s Beat, we’ll cover games reaching milestones, upgrading servers, new sites, and more. Let’s get started.

Nodeka, a time based MUD, was experiencing a bug where “RP points” were awarded to players killing their own followers. As of last week, the bug has been fixed so there should be no further worries caused by this inconvenience.
In additional news, there has been extensive modification to their Mejath quest format. With any new modifications to a game, problems may arise. If you run into any problems with Mejath quests not working correctly, contact Nijlo (nijlo@nodeka.com).

You can visit the Nodeka website here.

Netrek, a client simulation, is currently in the process of replacing hardware to their server, which has experienced a disk failure. During this time, the Netrek homepage will be down. However, you can still download Netrek software from here. I’ll hopefully have more information in next week’s Beat, by that time I’m hoping the Netrek homepage will be backup. Stay tuned.

MagiKnights, a client RPG, has launched their new site. The reason behind the new site is for a more clean navigation for their members. The site is still undergoing many updates, but for the most part, you’ll have no trouble with it. The design of this new site lets you register on this site and will automatically register you on the forum.
You can visit the MagiKnights website here.

PlaneShift, a client RPG, has made an announcement on their website about various updates.

“The update to version 0.3.011 is now available also for Linux and Mac OSX. You can get it from our download section.

In the past weeks, we tested some new features, including random loot on NPCs. Many monsters carry special items created from the base ones. For example you can find items like: ‘Scorched Dagger of Twilight’ or ‘Bear’s Polished Dagger’. There is a wide range of adjectives, and each provides special effects to the weapon, making it unique. There are currently around 5500 unique weapons collected by players, thanks also to the fact that we have little control on the power of spawned weapons. We are working on it, adding some formulas that will make low level monsters spawn low level weapons.

Latest update included also a number of visual fixes on hydlaa level, and some additions to the magic shop.”

You can visit the PlaneShift website here.

Regno, a client card game, reached a milestone of 100 days online. Congratulations to the Regno staff and loyal gamers. To celebrate this milestone, Regno released a special card, which was only obtainable on that day. Make sure to sign-up now in case of future events like this.
Thanks to Cyborg, from the OMGN forums, for providing the information. You can visit the Regno website here. Again, congrats on the milestone Regno.

Lands of Hope, a browser base RPG, has released a new tool called the LoH mapper. This is part of the announcement from their website.

“This is a map assistance tool which can be used outside of the game to view the maps at full size. It also allows you to search for tiles that have a specific level range spawn on them.

Furthermore, you can also display level numbers and add custom markers to the map.

Your map can then be saved back using File > Save so that it overwrites your in-game map images allowing your custom map to show up in the game if you so wish.”

You can visit the Lands of Hope website here.

GiveNGo, a time based sports (football/soccer) game, has announced that all existing players have been removed and replaced with more realistic players.

“This means that all team will now have players for each position, with primary and secondary skills. All player properties are realistic, and a new property, cross, has been added for wingers.”

A basic formula has also been written for player wages and value and changed the team “view”.
You can visit the GiveNGo website here.

That’s it for this week’s edition. Hope you found the information useful. Feel free to send me an email to let me know about updates or news from your game that you’d like featured in The Gamer’s Beat next week.

Michael Bloomberg Apparently Set For Re-Election as NYC Mayor

Speaking of Republicans who fail to live up to their promises of cutting down on wasteful government/cutting excessive taxes, here’s Fred Siegel’s take on why U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner withdrew from the NYC mayoral Democrat Party primary runoff:

Political consultant Joe Mercurio, who took the hapless Virginia Fields from 12 percent to 30 percent in the polls before he was fired and the campaign collapsed, suggests that Weiner staffers such as strategist Joel Benenson took a close look at the numbers and decided that Weiner simply could not beat [Fernando] Ferrer in a runoff. Speaking to NY1, the all-news cable station, Benenson himself seemed to suggest exactly that. But campaign staffs rarely take themselves out of a race. More likely Weiner and his staff were given friendly advice from senior Democrats about what the numbers meant for their political futures in the party. Why bloody yourself in a campaign against Ferrer and Sharpton, Weiner was probably asked, when Bloomberg, now with a 64 percent approval rating, looks like a sure winner in November?

Appearing on NY1 last night, Weiner, playing the good soldier, sounded the party’s themes for the general election, blasting Bloomberg as a Republican who aligned himself with such disreputable figures as George Bush and George Pataki. But this is unlikely to fly. Bloomberg, who was a Democrat before he decided to buy his way out of the internecine warfare of the party’s primaries by purchasing the GOP nomination, has correctly convinced even partisan Democrats that he’s a Republican in name only. The billionaire’s base is now those Manhattan liberals who supported Mark Green last time and have scant affection for Ferrer. They, like most New York Democrats, largely stayed home on primary day–leading to a near-record-low turnout of 16 percent.

Those “manhattan liberals” aka yuppy scum who confuse their babblings at New York coffee houses for the legitimate will of the people have long taken the attitude that if one of their selfish own can’t be mayor, then no Democrat should. As a result, guys like Ferrer who are in the FDR New Deal tradition find it much harder to win in NYC than it should. That’s how losers like Bloomberg who was elected mayor only because of 9/11 become NYC mayor and other high political offices and why NY politics is all screwed up.

The Republican Betrayal of the Taxpayers

Ever wonder why Federal taxes are still so high despite the fact that George W. Bush was twice elected with a tax-cutting platform? Here’s one good reason from columnist Debra J. Saunders:

Conservative dean William Rusher issued this sage advice at the University Club in San Francisco last week: Don’t expect Republican politicians to be faithful ideologues, they’ll only break your heart.

My heart, I must say, never did go pitter pat for House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. Still, he done me wrong when, as The Washington Times reported Wednesday, he declared “victory” on congressional efforts to cut spending and said there was no fat left in the federal budget.

DeLay personifies the most ugly reality Republican voters must face: When a Democrat is in the White House, GOP members of Congress at least give lip service to the idea of watching taxpayers’ pennies, and they’ll oppose the president’s pork barrel projects. But with a Republican president and Republicans in control of both houses of Congress, they become high rollers.

DeLay is a pathological liar. The Federal budget is as larded now as its been for the last few decades. What he and the congressional Republicans have done is sold out to the very same special interests that earlier corrupted the Democrats during their 40-year reign in the U.S. House (1954-1994).

Book Review: Codex by Lev Grossman

Currently, the Middle Ages is in vogue with college courses on the subject attracting students who are not history majors and medieval re-enactment societies enjoy wide popularity. Codex is a novel that although set in the present time, is closely linked to the Middle Ages.

Codex is a novel in which the reader will learn a great deal about medieval literature and also about the coded messages that were sometimes encrypted in such works. The hero, Edward, is a medieval literature specialist who also plays computer games. One of Edward’s tasks is attempting to track down a rumored work by 14th Century poet Geoffrey Chaucer.

This may sound like a dull plot, but Codex is actually a compulsive page turner. It is historically accurate and is blessed with rich characterization. No cardboard characters here.

Codex is an incredible novel.

Book Review: Michael Moore is a Big Fat Stupid White Man by David T. Hardy & Jason Clarke

Michael Moore is one of the most controversial figures of our time. He has made movies and television shows and written books about the contemporary American scene. There are many who love him and others who hate him with very few folks who are in between the two extremes.

Both Jason Clarke and David T. Hardy can be counted among the critics of Michael Moore. They are the creators of the popular MooreLies.com and MooreExposed.com websites that are dedicated to exposing what they consider to be the wholesale falsehoods of Michael Moore. They contend that Moore’s documentaries are so far off base they really should be called “crockumentaries.”

According to Clarke and Hardy, Moore bends the facts to fit a predetermined thesis. He doctors film footage, manipulates facts and takes excerpts out of speeches completely out of context by doing so tampers with the truth. He has also gotten in trouble for this tendency. For example, Warner Brothers was forced to pay legal damages to a man who was unfairly denigrated in Moore’s first film, Roger and Me.

According to Clarke and Hardy, Moore is a man who pretends to be a man of the downtrodden even though he lives in Manhattan, is rich, and enjoys a luxurious lifestyle. Additionally, they point out that although Moore has often claimed that he comes from a blue collar family, he is really from an affluent background. They say that Moore’s denunciations of rich white people is only an act.

According to Clarke and Hardy, Moore’s documentary Bowling for Columbine is “as manipulative as totalitarian propaganda.” In that same film, he made Charlton Heston, a personal friend of Martin Luther King and a supporter of civil rights in the 1960’s, out to be a racist nut via “creative” editing and manipulating the evidence.

According to Clarke and Hardy, Moore’s attacks on Heston were especially interesting in light of his own racial problems. For instance, just after 9/11 Moore made what many consider to be vicious racist slurs on an European speaking tour.

Essentially, Clarke and Hardy’s argument is that Michael Moore is a fraud who lusts for political power, public attention and above all, money.

Exit Arthur Chrenkoff

One of the few blog writers who really exemplified the full meaning of the term “New Media” has retired from the scene. This is the Australian writer Arthur Chrenkoff whose namesake bog was a certifiable alternative news service in its own right.

Following is Chrenkoff’s retirement post that he wrote before saddling up and riding off into the sunset:

Here we go – as foreshadowed a few week ago, it’s the time to say good-bye.

I’m not one for making speeches (at least not for myself), so let me just say: thank you. Thank you for all your support and encouragement, for reading and linking to my stuff, and for coming back. Blogging has been a great adventure for me for those past eighteen months. I’ve always enjoyed writing, and I’ve always enjoyed politics. Blogging allowed me to combine these two passions and reach tens of thousands of people around the world. Most importantly, the traffic has not been one way only. It’s getting to know so many of you – via other blogs, via comments, via email – that has made it so very worthwhile. It has not been an easy year for me this year, but you all made it better.

You have to accept this collective appreciation, since there are too many of you to thank individually – but everything I said on the occasion of my first blogiversary a few months ago still stands.

And, as a nice bonus, you’ve all managed to clock up three million visits on this site since it started on March 31, 2004. I didn’t expect that would happen before my retirement, so it definitely made my day.

I’m signing off, but the war goes on. I rejoice in the scope and quality of the blogosphere that is able to provide you with so many alternatives to my blog. I’m sure you’ll enjoy much good reading in the future. My thoughts will remain with all those on the frontlines of the struggle for freedom and democracy.

So, thanks again, God bless, and keep in touch.

He will be missed.

A Chicagoland MAME Project

Previously this blog covered the fascinating Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator (M.A.M.E.) Project . Now, a local gamer who is also an electronics whiz has undertaken the restoration of vintage arcade game machines to their former glory.

This fellow is named Keith and he has already completely restored a 1982 Millipede machine to its full former glory and already has it for sale. This project is most interesting and it will be fascinating to see where it goes next.
