| | | | | | Lima Time Returns to L.A. | | | | | Lima Time Returns to L.A. as Jose Lima Signs with the Long Beach Armada Major League All-Star Selects Golden Baseball League to Showcase his Comeback Long Beach, CA. March 27, 2009 - The Long Beach Armada of the independent professional Golden Baseball League (GBL) have announced that they have agreed to terms with former Major League All-Star pitcher Jose Lima on a player contract for the 2009 season. Lima, who won 21 games in a season with Houston and was fourth in the Cy Young voting, pitched in the major leagues for the New York Mets in 2006, was the top pitcher in the Mexican League in 2007, and pitched in the Korean professional league in 2008. He will join Manager Garry Templeton's Long Beach Armada squad that has sent 17 players back to major league organizations including five last year and Cincinnati Reds' big leaguer Adam Pettyjohn.
"I'm excited to have Jose Lima pitching for us this year," said Long Beach Armada Manager Garry Templeton. "His experience, skill, and leadership will be a great benefit to us. I'm glad that we have the opportunity to showcase his skills and give him the chance to rejoin a major league club."
Lima, 36, broke into the major leagues as a 22-year old rookie with Detroit in 1994 and was traded to the Houston Astros a few years later where he became one of the most successful and flamboyant starting pitchers in the major leagues. He was a Natonal League All-Star in 1999 and went on to pitch in three National League Division Championship Series. In 2004, he went 13-5 for the Los Angeles Dodgers and threw a complete game against St. Louis in the NLDS which was the first Dodger playoff victory since the 1988 World Series. Well known for his colorful personality and entertainment skills, Lima would regularly have crowds chanting his name when he pitched, had the term "Lima Time" coined by the media to describe his unique presence while playing, sang the national anthem at major league games, has recorded as a bachata musician, and even had Fanstasy League strategies named for him.
"It will be a lot of fun for our fans to experience the passion and joy that Jose brings to the game," said Long Beach Armada General Manager Tony Soares. "We will definitely have special promotions and fan activities on the nights he pitches and give the Armada faithful lots of "Lima Time!"

Court Rules that ex-Major Leaguer Reneged on Agreements and Caused Damages Long Beach, CA. March 30, 2009 - The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that the Superior Court of the State of California for the County of Los Angeles has officially rendered a judgment in favor of the Golden Baseball League and the Long Beach Armada in their lawsuit versus defendant Jose Canseco for an amount of $258,750.
After consideration of the evidence, the Court found in favor of the Long Beach Armada. The Golden Baseball League and the Long Beach Armada were suing Canseco for breach of a marketing agreement entered into during the summer of 2006 when Canseco played for the Long Beach Armada. The multiple breaches of the agreement are detailed in the attached lawsuit which was served on Canseco in August of 2008 after lack of response from Canseco and his string of attorneys over a two year period.
"We are pleased that the court has ruled in our favor and has agreed with our position," said Golden Baseball League attorney Alexander M. Polyachenko. "We are sorry that Mr. Canseco chose not to honor his contractural obligations and that we had to pursue the damages through the courts, but that was his choice. The next step will be a formal Asset Verification and collection of the judgment."
Canseco was signed to a Uniform Players Contract and a Marketing Agreement by the Long Beach Armada and Golden Baseball League during the summer of 2006 in his attempt to launch a comeback to return to the major leagues as a knuckleball pitcher and designated hitter. After less than half of his contracted time, he was performing poorly as a hitter and pitcher and was having erratic behaviour on and off the field. He chose to abandon his team and his contract leaving unfullfilled obligations.

Yomiuri Giants Pitcher Opts for Free Agency to Sign and Be Showcased in U.S. Yuma, AZ. March 30, 2009 - The Yuma Scorpions of the independent professional Golden Baseball League (GBL) have announced that they have agreed to terms with highly regarded Japanese pitcher Yosuke Kawaguchi. The young pitcher, 21, has opted for free agency from the Yomiuri Giants to sign with Yuma to showcase his abilities in the U.S. to better gain the attention of major league organizations.
"I'm excited to have this young man as part of the pitching staff for the Scorpions," said Yuma Manager Mike Marshall. "He has been considered one of the top young pitchers in Japan since high school and will be exciting for our fans to watch. Probably the best Japanese player we've had in Yuma since the Yakult Swallows discontinued their use of our facility for spring training."
Kawaguchi, 21, 6-2, 190, was the 96th player taken overall in the 2005 draft out of Yoshikan High School in Ohita, Japan. Selected in the 5th round by the Fukuoka Soft Bank Hawks, he developed in their system before going to the perennial powerhouse Yomiuri Giants in 2008. Unable to break into their veteran-laden pitching staff despite a 1.69 E.R.A. in the minor league just a level below, he opted for free agency to improve his opportunities. Represented by well known Japanese player agent Jay Shindo, he selected the Golden League for it's track record of having players signed by major league organizations and the Yuma Scorpions for their facilities and the community's longstanding support and affinity for Japanese players.
"From the Japan Samurai Bears in our first year, to signing former Japanese big league players such as Masashi Chikazawa and Michinao Yamamura and moving Japanese players to major league organizations such as Keisuke Ueno we continue to look to ways to partner with players, teams, and leagues from Japan," said GBL Commissioner Kevin Outcalt. "This is a good example of a continued strengthening of that relationship as Nippon Professional Baseball players are now specifically selecting the GBL to advance their careers."

Instructional Showcase League For Collegiate and Pro Free Agents
(Yuma, AZ. March 30, 2009) The Arizona Summer League (ASL), a new league for professional or aspiring professional players is now set to play in Yuma, Arizona for a month this summer starting on June 28th.
The four team instructional league will be administered by the independent Golden Baseball League (GBL) and will be staffed with instructors and managers with major league and professional experience who will place their top players with pro teams. Similar to the very successful free agent Arizona Winter League which has had over 200 players leave with pro contracts during the last three years, the ASL will be a key source for free agent players for independent pro teams, major league organizations, and foreign professional teams that need to re-stock their rosters during the season.
\223The Arizona Winter League has been the most successful showcase league to land players pro jobs in the off-season and I expect that the Arizona Summer League will do the same druing the season," said Arizona Summer League Commissioner Kevin Outcalt.
Arizona Summer League games will be held at the Ray Kroc Complex and Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma where a 20-game season with a Championship Game will be played during the month. The four teams of 25-man rosters will be made up of professional free-agents and collegiate graduates overlooked in the June draft using this as a development/instructional opportunity to be signed and play professional baseball immediately. At the conclusion of the league, at least the top 10 players that will be signed to Golden Baseball League contracts and report to their teams, in addition players may be signed at anytime during the league by GBL, other independent, foreign, or major league organizations.
The four teams will be managed by Major League star and Japan League MVP Warren Cromartie, two-time Major League All-Star and independent manager Ozzie Virgil, Major Leaguer and Washinton Nationals minor league pitching coach Rusty Meacham, and minor league all-star and Florida Marlins and Detroit Tigers minor league manager Benny Castillo. In addition, other instructors will include Major League All-Star and 2-time World Series champ Mike Marshall, Boston Red Sox scout and baserunning guru Nick Belmonte, and legendary college and minor league coach Shannon Hunt.
\223This is a great opportunity for players to improve and demonstrate their skills and receive pro contracts for the 2009 season and beyond," said AWL Commissioner Kevin Outcalt. \223In addition to playing for these managers with a chance to be signed, we have already been contacted by major league organizations and foreign pro leagues that plan to scout the league as well. Like the AWL, the Arizona Summer League will actively market our top players to MLB, independent, and foreign teams and we plan to duplicate the success of player placement we have had in the winter.\224
Players will report on June 28th with two days of training before the teams are drafted and the opening night game kicks off the season on July 1st. Five games a week will be run for each team playing at the stadium facilities with all weekend games run with full minor league activities including game day promotions, fan giveaways, entertainment acts, mascots, full concessions, etc. All statistics will be reported to the league's official statistician, ESPN Sportsticker and displayed on their site.
